I found this slightly-battered paperback (different cover than shown) at a local library or charity sale. As I really love the book I'm always glad to find another release copy.
One of Renault's series of historical novels about Alexander the Great, this book is from the point of view of a young Persian eunuch who becomes Alexander's attendant and lover; the novel covers the period from Alexander's first major victories in Persia through his death. The historical details are, I believe, quite accurate (though there's considerable controversy about the facts of Alexander's life), but while the fictionalized "Persian boy" is based on a real character, the author has taken considerable liberty with him in order to fill in the background of one of the most colorful and memorable historical figures of all time. While taking us along to the battles, journeys, and travails of Alexander and his troops, this book is really more of a love story, and it's a beautiful one at that - touching, and believable. (One of my favorite aspects of the story was the way Bagoas and Hephaestion dealt with their situations - they were jealous of each other and worried about the other's influence with Alexander, yet they developed a kind of respect as they realized the extent of each other's devotion.) And I admit to getting quite teary at the end!

I'm adding this book to k00kaburra's Ancient World bookbox; hope someone enjoys it! [The mailing order is in this forum thread, and the bookbox journal can be seen here.] The box will be on its way soon.

I've always heard this is a very good book, but never read anything by Renault (and I love historical fiction). So I think this needs to be added to my stacks. (I think I do have a copy of The King Must Die.) Thanks again, GoryD!
Sadly, MaryZee passed suddenly in September 2012. MaryZee's daughter is now ready to rehome her mom's books and I was willing to collect and redistribute them to keep her literary legacy alive.
