At first when I had just started this book, I thought it wasn't going to be my cup of tea but found I really enjoyed it. I read it on a train journey and it was perfect for that - a fast, light, entertaining read, and because of the short letter format it didn't matter too much being interrupted by ticket collectors etc.

Passed to me by nyassa when we met up for lunch yesterday - it was great to finally meet another bookcrosser! I look forward to having a chuckle at this book and will then pass it on marianfrench.

I enjoyed the first couple of chapters but after that the novelty wore off I'm afraid. I couldn't maintain any interest nor enthusiasm in it after that. Maybe I needed a train journey like nyassa! I just began to feel I would enjoy it more if I were listening to it instead of reading to it, which was of course what it was written for!

Posted this off to marianfrench on Friday!

I haven't read any of the other books featuring these characters which I think may have helped a bit as it seems that you are straight on in there with no gentle build up. Having said that you very quickly pick up the character traits of the two main players. It's a very fast read and although I didn't read it on a train, I did read it off and on between toddler naps and it was great for that. Maybe a bit predictable but fun anyway.

A quick easy read. I have listened to the series on Radio 4 and did read this with the voices of Prunella Scales and Patricia Routledge in my head - which helps I think. I enjoyed the malopropisms and interesting spellings that I had missed while listening to the radio.

This book has not been rated.

Received in the post today. I listened to the Radio 4 serial off and on so I will be reading it with the Prunella and Patricia voices in my head too. I just started a rather thick book today so it might be a week or so before I start reading this one but I'll get to it as soon as I can.

Really looking forward to it, I'm in the right sort of mood for this one.

Oh I loved this. It took me two commutes to finish it so its a very quick read. I could hear their voices as I read which only made it funnier. I really did snigger out loud on the train like a big looney.

Posting it off to Jalna at the weekend.

I loved the Ladies of Letters when I heard them on the radio, so I know this book is going to be a good one. I'm a little bit sorry not to have read the first 3 first, but I don't think that will really spoil my enjoyment at all.

Very enjoyable. I think you do need to have heard at least some of these on the radio to get the full pleasure of them.

Will be sending on to Jords.

How funny is this book?!!!!!!!! You could really hear the voices of Patricia Routledge and Prunella Scales coming through the writing (and I haven't actually heard this on R4 either!) I couldn't sleep last night and ended up reading it - it had the opposite effect, instead of making me drowsy, it made me more and more awake as I was laughing so much.

Thanks so much for sharing - off to Camis next

I had been looking forward to this one having heard and enjoyed some of the earlier instalments on Radio 4. However, I just found myself getting annoyed with these two silly old biddies, and their antics moved from mildly entertaining to cringeworthy. Whether the first set of letters was better, or whether the concept just comes across better on radio, I don't know, but I'm afraid I just didn't get on with this one. Sorry :( Perhaps I'm just not in the right frame of mind! And while I can "hear" the Routledge/Scales voices, I am also put in mind of those two actresses playing Hyacinth Bucket and the Tesco advert woman, both of whom I detest...

Anyway, this will be going back to Gooner or on to another (hopefully more appreciative!) recipient as soon as possible. Thanks for the chance to try it, anyway!

Oops .... I was convinced I'd journalled this one when it arrived. Sorry about that.

Anyway, I read this today whilst sitting in the park and found it mildly amusing - I haven't heard the radio series but reckon I could imagine the voices of Prunella Scales and Patricia Routledge through the writing. However, I enjoyed the first few letters but then found it a bit repetitive, a bit like a one-off comedy sketch that's been commissioned for a whole series. It made for a pleasant quick read on a hot day, but I don't think I'll be looking out for any more books in the series. Might have to catch the radio show one day though!

Thanks for letting me read this. Where's it going next?

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

RELEASE NOTES:

This one came home to me from its travels, so I decided to release it.

Because I don't do wild releases - hardly ever have, and never will - because of the fear of causing a security alert, and wasting the time of hard-pressed emergency services, I decided to divert our Oxfordshire friends via the Cherry Tree for a drink. Of course, while I was there I left the book on the OBCZ shelf. Hope someone picks it up and journals it.
