Journal Entry 1 by franaloe from Utrecht, Utrecht Netherlands on Wednesday, January 4, 2012
I have been wanting to read a book by T.C. Boyle for a long time, and last year I finally got to picking one (I have 3 on my shelves) and reading it. I am normally more of a novel reader, and not so much of a story book enthusiast, but right at the first page I wondered why it had taken me so long to pick up one of his books, because it was awesome! I was immediately drawn into the absurd story, and after finishing that, into the next one. What a fantasy this man has, and yet, how realistic are the stories at the same time. I liked the unexpected turns, the use of language, actually everything, although most of the stories have a probably not so positive ending. My favorite story is 'The swift passage of the animals', because of its desperateness and the looser factor of the main character.

Since the book is published in 2005, I hope that the participants of the 'favorite-book-you-have-read-in-2011-roundabout' have not yet read this one. And that you all enjoy the book as much as I did.

I got this book in the mail today. What a great surprise! T.C. Boyle is one of my favourite authors, I just love his black humour. The love affair started with World´s End but my favourite one by him is Water Music. I have not read this book and am now looking forward to reading it. What a great start to the favourite book of 2011 round-about.

I finished this book with a collection of short stories over the weekend. It was a great read and I enjoyed every one of them. I think one of my favourites was Dogology and I also liked the story with the girl in the car accident. Lovely pick for the favourite of 2011 round-about. This book will travel again shortly. Thanks for sharing!

I read this book for the Country-Hopping-Challenge 2012 for the U.S.A.

Oops, I never wrote the journal entry that I received the book! I've had it for about a month and I'm ready to pass it on.

When I first started reading the book, I didn't really like it. The first stories were strange, I was ready to put the book down and stop reading. It did get better after a while. I particularly liked the story about the couple stuck in the snow storm and the story about the new town Jubilation.

Despite the fact that I didn't care all that much for the book, I am glad I got to read it. Thanks for sharing, Franaloe!

Arrived today - thanks a lot! I actually have two books by this author on my bookshelf and haven't yet picked one up, so I'm quite interested in trying something new :).

I'm afraid this wasn't my cup of tea - but then, I usually don't like short stories (they keep me wanting for more details)... sorry! I'll just have to try one of T.C. Boyle's novels and see if that's more to my taste.

The book is now travelling to the next reader.

Journal Entry 9 by LilyKlip at Leipzig, Sachsen Germany on Tuesday, April 10, 2012
T.C. Boyle is, without a doubt, a good writer. However, the stories just didn't pique my interest. They were ok but just didn't have anything that made me go on reading. I read the first 5 or 6 but will give up on this one now.

Thanks for sharing anyway.

Today this book finally arrived safely in my mailbox.
Look forward to reading it. My first by T.C. Boyle...

Journal Entry 12 by Boekentrol at Leeuwarden, Fryslân (Friesland) Netherlands on Saturday, May 12, 2012
Had the book contained only 3 stories, it would have gotten 8 stars. But... it didn't.

Of all the stories, there were actually 3 that I liked a lot, being "When I woke up this morning, Everything I had was gone", "Chicxulub" and "Tooth and Claw". Why these? I'm not sure. They differ quite a bit when contents is compared, but the main thing is, that they kept my attention for one reason or the other while reading. I actually liked the writing and wanted more of these three, found they were too short, altough the story in itself was 'finished'.

I'm not going to retell the stories. When you're curious, read them for yourselves.
I got curious enough to want to read more of this writer, but then a novel.

Thank you very much! It's always such a surprise to open the new favourite book packages and see what book it is. I think this is right up my street.

I really enjoyed this book. The stories where very beautifully writen, very lyrical, with a bit of a dark side too it. My favourite was swept away.

A collection of short stories, the latest in the 'Favourites of 2011' roundabout. I've lost count of where I am in this, but we must be nearing the end, I think. Anyway, I could see the attraction in this; the stories are very rich, dense and evocative, with a twist of ironic humour, and the best of them stay with you. Precisely because of this richness, however, I found that this wasn't a book to be rushed - in fact, I might have been happier reading one story every week for a couple of months, or something like that, but I have no self-control, and anyway this book needs to go on to the next reader. Consequently, I came away feeling that some of these stories were a bit same-y (particularly the ones about young white American men who are wasting their lives on drink and drugs) and that I'd have enjoyed them much more in isolation. Which is not to say I didn't enjoy them. Chicxulub was my favourite, for what that's worth.

Oh my goodness the favourites roundabout is catching up on me, this is the second book I have waiting. The Edinburgh Festival must be slowing me down. Although technically, I think this is my October book. We're really flying through them.

What to say... I wasn't expecting much and well, I just didn't like it. Not a fan of short stories and not a fan of TC Boyle - so I guess this book didn't stand a chance with me. I finished about the half of it, but am just sending it on now as it has been with me quite a while already.

Hope the next one will like it!

Book received, thanks. I haven't read T.C. Boyle before so don't know what to expect.

Journal Entry 25 by Annimanni at Espoo, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Saturday, December 29, 2012
As often happens with short story collections, the reading experience was uneven. A few of the stories I enjoyed immensely, others I just skimmed through or even skipped, if the beginning didn't hook me immediately. I'd quite like to try one of Boyle's novels though.

My favourites among the stories (I suppose because there was something that touched me in each of them) were When I Woke Up This Morning..., Rastrow's Island, Chicxulub, All the Wrecks I've Crawled Out Of, Tooth and Claw and Up Against the Wall.

***

I'm now waiting to hear from franaloe whether she wants me to send the book back to her or find it another reader. (Did you get my PM, franaloe?)
