The Other Hand

The lives of two women from very different worlds collide at a beach in Nigeria, and everything changes, for both of them.
I was originally drawn to the book because of the cover, and turned off by the editors note and its hype. I was later given the book and quite enjoyed it. Though it's not THAT great. I found the story a bit unrealistic and after a good start it started to loose steam somehow. Still, a good read. And while I found the story unrealistic in places (like the encounter at the beach) I am sure stories like that of Little Bee's are all too common.

Very different lives indeed... I liked this book a lot, and I'm especially glad I didn't read the Finnish translation - would probably have missed a lot. Thank you saarahoo for sharing this one.
This book travels along as a wishlist surprise.

Thank you so much Piiku! What a great surprise! Really looking forward to reading this one!
I really enjoyed this book. Not the best one I've ever read, but definetely worth reading. It was interesting to take a peek into the mind of a refugee and how she saw our western world.

Picked this up from the Helsinki area bc meetup today. I wasn't put off by the hype. On the contrary, all the hype and secrecy about the subject made me want to read this! CandyDarling was also interested in the book, so I have to remember to PM her once I've read this.
I liked this book. It wasn't worth all the hype but it was good nevertheless. It was interesting to read about the detention centre. There was just one thing that bothered me: there was an event towards the end of the book that I felt was just too unrealistic. I found it really unbelievable that the others wouldn't have understood immediately why Little Bee didn't want to call the police. As this was an important plot point for the rest of the book, it really bothered me.
How good that I wrote in the last journal entry that I need to pm CandyDarling, because I would have totally forgotten that! Will do that now.

CandyDarling didn't want the book after all, so I'm taking it to the Helsinki area bc meetup to see if it would find a new reader there. Happy reading!
Grabbed the book from this weeks meet up. Thanks for the book Silkki!
