Spring 1543 - King Henry VIII is wooing Catherine Parr, whom he wants for his sixth wife.

Matthew Shardlake is working on the case of a a teenage boy who has been placed in the Bedlam insane asylum, and fears that the boy's terrifying religious mania could lead to him being turned heretic.

When an old friend is horrifically murdered, Shardlake promises his widow that he will bring the killer to justice.

This is a historical mystery :)

This is another historical murder mystery from the Shardlake series.

Journal Entry 7 by winggreenbadgerwing at St Albans, Hertfordshire United Kingdom on Sunday, July 15, 2018
Fourth in the Shardlake series. Shardlake, the hunchbacked lawyer, is once again pursuing a delicate case - this time of a young man sent to Bedlam for obsessive praying. His case seems symptomatic of society at large, as once more there is confrontation between Catholics and Reformers, as Henry VIII seems to be turning to more traditional religion. Then an old friend and fellow-lawyer is horrifically murdered and Shardlake promises to investigate, leading him once more into political circles as there's a potential link to Catherine Parr, and a further link to religious obsession and the Book of Revelation. This series gets better and better, Sansom paints Tudor England brilliantly and with the fascinating interlinked plotlines this is difficult to put down.
