I'm taking this paperback from the ABC Bookbox. While my favorite work by Grimes is her weird mystery-in-poems Send Bygraves, I've enjoyed some of her more traditional mysteries as well, and am looking forward to reading this one.
I was amused to find that the title of the book refers to a pub, which was named for an obscure phrase meaning either an herbal remedy worn around the neck to soothe teething pains in infants, or (more aptly, given the story!) "hangman's noose" (as it gives the victim permanent release from pain).
It opens atmospherically, in the London Underground, with a busker's plaintive violin echoing - until a brutal attack cuts the music short. A complex puzzle unfolds, leading Jury to a village which contains the titular pub, and where he works to piece together the clues while finding himself the object of considerable watchfulness by the locals.
I laughed aloud when I came across the illustration of the map of "The Forest of Horndean", which is part of an ongoing game of "Wizards and Warlords" played in the pub. The map's a clue too, of course - and while I didn't get its significance at first, once I realized what it was based on things began to come together!
