From Amazon:

First-novelist Chabon, with "distinctive vision" and "an elegiac, graceful style," spins a story about alienated youth that, while serving up some familiar details of sex, alcohol and drugs, "fully engages the reader in the lives of an appealing cast of characters," said PW .

I received this as a gift and would like to send it traveling for a little while, as I don't see myself getting to it soon. Starting an international bookring and we'll see how it goes!

This is now heading out as an international bookring! I'm still interested in reading it, but do not see myself getting to it soon. Why let it languish on my shelves in the meantime?!

This is a "take your time" bookring, so no need to rush through it in a month if you don't prefer. As long as you check in and keep us posted after a few months or so, there's no problem. Please just be sure to journal it when you receive it.

Participants:

imawinn2 (USA, ships international)
Cavalier10 (USA, ships international)
gaboyd (New Zealand, ships international)
PJLBewdy (Australia, ships international)
ababaigalit (Israel, ships international)
ravencat (USA, ships US/CAN)

Back to Flewry (USA)

The ring has completed. Thanks to everyone who took part!

The book arrived in yesterday's mail. Perfect timing as I am heading out on vacation in a couple of days and will need a good book to read while I fly to and fro and laze around. Ahh! Looking forward to the escape (travel and reading wise).

Journal Entry 5 by imawinn2 at Neenah, Wisconsin USA on Wednesday, February 8, 2012
I started this and finished it while on my vacation. In fact, I finished it on the flight home today. I had a little bit of trouble getting into this book at first but the beautiful writing by Chabon kept me going. Hard to believe that this was his first novel (and written while attending college). I will say that I liked Kavalier and Clay better than The Mysteries of Pittsburgh but mainly because Kavalier and Clay was a more adventurous tale . This story is more of a narrative following a group of young adults as they discover a summer of freedom, love and who they are to be. It has a nice touch of humor, anxiety and tragedy. The characters grew on me, the further I got into the story. It was a nice, well written story. Thanks so much for sharing!

I contacted Cavalier10 the other day, asking for an address. As soon as I hear from this participant, I will send this book on its journey.

I read this book with pleasure although it is by no means my favourite Chabon. Certainly evidences the mature style that characterises his later work. This book is due to travel to Israel on the next leg of its journey - hopefully I will be able to send it on its way soon.

never read any of Chabon's work, but this was a much-heralded first novel from a Pulitzer winner so I thought it would be a good read. I thought the narrative drive of this book, its sense of tragedy and events coming to an unavoidable head, was very powerful.
At times, you want to slap his characters for making the wrong choice, being immature, saying something overly fanciful, or just being too apparently well-read and smart. But then you realize that this is how just-graduated college students often do act, how they often do talk, and that they often are well-read. This is a well-written coming-of-age story that does feel like a throwback to the '50s, though its set in the 80s,

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

This was my first Chabon novel and I did appreciate his detailed style of writing although I did have a little difficulty getting into the storyline. As the characters developed and became more complicated with their choices in lifestyles it caught my interest and did end up enjoying it. For writing this book in college for his thesis, it was very well done and I would like to read more of him to see how his writing has evovled. Thanks flewry for sharing and now on its way back to you.

When Regulator and I met up with JudySlump and DrSlump this past weekend in Minneapolis, they were kind enough to bring along some books for us to take back to Indiana with us. I'm told this one in particular was so thoughtfully extracted from flewry's bookbox, and it has now gone on my Mom's personal TBR stack (she took all of them out of my hands when I offered them to her and skipped off to add them). She doesn't "computer" herself, but does dictate a journal entry to me after each BC book she finishes, and then they do get released, so I shall update again when she finishes this book and is ready to tell me her thoughts. When she's done, I'm particularly curious about finding a way to get this book to Pittsburgh for a themed release.... Thanks for sharing vicariously!

Released 7 yrs ago (11/3/2016 UTC) at Firefly Coffee House, 3523 N. Anthony Blvd. in Fort Wayne, Indiana USA

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

My Mom was excited to read this, as the author was on her "to read" list, but she had trouble connecting with the story. I'm sending it to continue its journey via Firefly's take a book/leave a book shelf. Enjoy!
