Excellent book set in Wales at the end of WWII. The town has a POW camp built in the middle of it by English laborers. Esther, is raped and gets pregnant by one of the laborers. Her father doesn't even notice, he's so busy shepherding his lambs, which play a pivotal imagery role in the story. One of the German POWs, Karsten, escapes and takes refuge on Esther's farm. She treats him with kindness, until a foster brother and her father find him and turn him in - becoming heroes for finding him.
