As the Civil War thrashes to a painful conclusion wounded Confederate soldier Owen Danforth rides home to Texas, now a place more savagely divided than the nation itself. There, the war is not over, with father pitted against son in hard-fought local battles between secessionist "home guards" and staunch Union loyalists. Forced against his will to join his father and a band of Union guerrillas, Owen must make a bitter peace in his own heart - with a rifle in his hands.
