7 out of 10

I found this book at a local Dollar Store, and as it's from the wacky folks at Quirk Books I thought I'd give it a try; I've enjoyed many of their books in the past.

To my surprise, the book's not the wacky, far-out, Hitchhiker's-Guide parody I thought it might be; instead, it's a reasonably straightforward guide to really, truly going into space, using current technology. It includes a history of space flight, describing different levels of spacecraft, from the jets that can get to extremely high altitudes to orbiting craft to actual leaving-orbit craft. There's info about the kinds of medical tests and other preparations needed for someone to qualify for a space flight, tips on "how to survive the vestibular chair" (the rotating chair used to test tolerance for spending time in a spinning spaceraft), and - one of the more amusing entries - "how to appear sane in the psychological exam," which features tips such as "avoid uncontrollable sobbing".

There's a brief English/Russian phrase list, tips for avoiding motion sickness during zero-G training, explanations for the quarantine period before a flight, how to get your bearings when you're in space (hint: "the sun rises in the east" is no help at all), what to do in case of emergencies, and even basic etiquette ("Do not play chess. Though especially popular with Russian cosmonauts, playing chess on the Space Station is serious business and can lead to conflict."). How to eat, drink, and relieve yourself in zero-G, how to occupy yourself while in space, even how to get used to gravity again when you return - a very comprehensive guide indeed!
