Picked up a job lot of books at an auction - have far too many to read myself so have decided to give a pile of them away before Christmas.

This looked suitably silly and it was, but also a brilliant read. I enjoyed it from start to finish. Especially suitable for those who are cynical about men! :)

Released 9 yrs ago (6/24/2014 UTC) at Brigantes Bar & Brasserie OBCZ / Meetup Venue in York, North Yorkshire United Kingdom

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

This was brilliant so I definitely want to bring it back for another reader to enjoy at the next meetup. I'm slightly ashamed that I've had it this long and only just got around to reading it myself. Very good.

Never read any books by this well acclaimed author, am looking forward to reading it

I managed to restrain myself at the Meetup and only take one book home - unfortunately, I'd already gathered an armful of books from a charity stall, so this one is unlikely to be started until the post-Christmas lull.
*addendum*
New year, laptop up and running again, meetup tonight. I am playing 'catch-up' with everything online!
Read it, enjoyed it.

I can't tell if this book is a surreal screwball comedy or actually deeply insightful about the human condition... A romantic comedy of the "loadsa characters" school that keeps all the balls in the air with wit and grace and has some WTF moments. Although, is Poppy made of catnip or something? Seriously!

(Occasionally marred by some, er, old-fashioned language about race.)

Journal Entry 13 by Worthers at York, North Yorkshire United Kingdom on Monday, July 1, 2019
I picked this up at a York bookcrossing meet-up in Brigantes several months ago. I enjoyed this book - it's a fun read and unashamedly silly. This might be my crap concentration but I did find it a bit confusing in the way it switches narrative voice between characters within the same paragraph and without any notice. I also found it grating that the words "North Africa" were bandied as though it's a country (where we they before they ended up in Algiers? Were they in Algeria the whole time or were they in a different country before that? I generally like settings to be narrowed down to at least a country) and yes some uncomfortable use of language about race.

Since this has been kicking around for a while now, in order to free up some space on the Brigantes OBCZ Bookshelf, I thought I'd move it on to the Ye Olde Starre Inne OBCZ Bookshelf - where hopefully it'll find a new reader...
