Yes people, the pre-christmas self-gifting continues. Stopped in at my favourite bookshop and purchased 3 books! See... this is why I must not get a Kindle I'd just bookshop all the time! This book was purchased specifically because its on the 1001 books to read before you die list.

Book has arrived, thank you :-)
I confess I was expecting a female version of “Dead Poets Society”, but this book did not disappoint.
In the early 1930’s, Miss Jean Brodie teaches junior students in a Edinburgh school and creates “The Brodie Set”, a group of six girls she has picked out to have the privilege of her special and unorthodox teachings. She takes them out to the cinema, the theater, plays golf with them and shares much of her prime wisdom, even her love affairs. But while trying to mold the girls to her image, she pushes too far, with some unpredictable consequences…
The author creates a mesmerizing character in Jean Brodie, a woman dedicated to her students and with a large passion for life, which is not understood by her peers. In fact, her fellow colleagues at school, including the headmistress, are always trying to find an excuse to get her fired, but she stands tall and takes the blows. Although I don´t agree with many of her actions, especially the ones related to her love affairs and political “brainwashing”, it is hard not to enjoy a person who has the courage to live her life, her way, with no care for what others think.
For a small book, Muriel Spark could have been a little less repetitive in some scenes (she repeats many times how the girls are going to end up after school!), and developed better the tension that leads to the ending. But, Jean Brodie is really a fun character, in all her prime.

I liked this book. Short, but with lots of things to enjoy myself with, for example Miss Brodie :-)
I liked the way the book was written, but what I disliked was the many repetitions of what was to happen. With the girls, but also with miss Brodie herself. In such a short book the numer of flash forwards could have been less. (I must admit, that I dislike these in general, even when they occur in a large book, so maybe I'm prejudiced..)
Nevertheless: another book crossed off the 1001-list, another book off MTBR and even better: a book that I liked and that hopefully helps me to get out of my reading dip.
