This collection contains some of the best classic era SF short stories ever written. They're all part of Heinlein's "Future History" -- a concept that amazed readers in 1941 when his Future History chart was published. These stories (and many other Heinlein stories and novels) form part of a consistent vision of the future.

The Green Hills of Earth contains all the stories shown on the chart from "Delilah and the Space-Rigger" to "Logic of Empire," except "Requiem" and "Searchlight".

My personal favourite from the collection is "'-- we also walk dogs'" in which the management of a corporation which is truly excellent at making money (and who take pride in their work) discover something more important... and it's not family, or human kindness, or democracy...

This edition is from 1977 so it's yellowing but is otherwise in good condition.

Reserved for UK SF and Fantasy VBB, starting July 2012.

Apologies for the delay in journalling this books arrival. I'm in the middle of changing jobs & life is a bit chaotic.

Thanks again for organising this & for posting the book out

This was originally published in 1954 and is surprisingly modern in some respects and dated in others.

Ten short stories in all, but they are all written for the same 'world' ie the space stations, colonies on the Moon, Mars, Venus all retain the same names, the technology remains the same or evolving in the same way etc. So even though the stories don't inter-relate, they do all work together to describe a vision of the future.

Mostly the technology and vision hasn't dated, although some of 'the future' is now our past and certainly didn't come to pass. The thing that did date the book is the attitude to race and gender - very much The 50s rather than the future. Favourite of the stories: Gentlemen, Be Seated; We Also Walk Dogs and The Green Hills of Earth.

So glad I picked this as part of the Sci-Fi VBB. Oh and whoever gets it next, don't worry about the white powder in some of the pages - the book was a bit musty when I received it, so I gave it a month in a bag of bi-carb to refresh it, not all of it came out.

hemma bar Edinburgh

I'm sure when it was first published it was an exciting read , but I found all but 1 of the stories boring

Logic of Empire was the only one worth reading , and that was the last one in it
