I generally don't care for mysteries/detective stories, but I read 'The Alienist' by Carr and I really enjoyed it. And I have a soft spot for historical fiction. I was with Carr almost all the way, but the end just seemed to drag out somewhat. His pacing is really taut and then when I was about 100 pages from the end, it just falls apart. But I was invested and had to finish it. Characters are pretty good - the same crew as 'Alienist,' only this time Sarah was even more irritatingly anachronistic. An engaging read.
