Journal Entry 1 by catsalive from Rooty Hill, New South Wales Australia on Saturday, November 12, 2011
Vikram Seth's novel is, at its core, a love story: Lata and her mother, Mrs. Rupa Mehra, are both trying to find -- through love or through exacting maternal appraisal -- a suitable boy for Lata to marry. Set in the early 1950s, in an India newly independent and struggling through a time of crisis, A Suitable Boy takes us into the richly imagined world of four large extended families and spins a compulsively readable tale of their lives and loves. A sweeping panoramic portrait of a complex, multiethnic society in flux, A Suitable Boy remains the story of ordinary people caught up in a web of love and ambition, humor and sadness, prejudice and reconciliation, the most delicate social etiquette and the most appalling violence.

Journal Entry 2 by catsalive at Rooty Hill, New South Wales Australia on Saturday, November 12, 2011
I read this back in 1993 when it first came out. I seem to recall that despite its daunting size - 1500 pp. - it was very easy and entertaining reading. I'm not about to read it again to see, so it's time to move this off my shelf into the big, wide world.

Arrived today. Thanks so much for tagging me with this one! I've read two other books by Seth and loved them both, and this one has often been recommended to me. So I look forward to reading it. Reserved for Stoepbrak once I've read it.
