-- A Phoenix 60p Paperback --

Synopsis/Review (Credit: Back cover)

A man and a woman meet at an airport, and one glance tells them both they have nothing in common. But first impressions can be misleading. An unexpected camaraderie develops, even though they know they will never meet again.

This collection of short stories shows why Maeve Binchy is one of today's most popular novelists. She writes with warmth and wit about the everyday quirks of life and love.

(Bought second-hand at Help the Rural Child Charity Bookshop, Victoria Road, Mowbray.)

Journal Entry 2 by Stoepbrak at Cape Town, Western Cape South Africa on Saturday, November 5, 2011

I am always amazed at how much story they manage to squeeze into such a small package (A6 size, 56 pages in this case). This one is even a collection of 5 short stories:

Cross Lines
Package Tour
The Consultant Aunt
The Apprenticeship
Excitement

Light, quick reading: a handful of sketches realistic enough to feel real, quirky enough to be interesting. Beautiful cover.

I'll make this available to form an ultralight, international bookray.

Bookray

The cost of shipping is one of the biggest stumbling blocks when it comes to international bookrays. With dimensions of 137 x 107 x 5 mm (5,4 x 4,2 x 0,2 inches), this booklet weighs in at 30 g (1 oz) and simply doesn't present that problem. In fact, it would be possible to send it sandwiched between two pieces of cardboard in a standard envelope. (Of course, slightly more robust packaging would be appreciated -- to help extend the book's life.)

Local ticket as bookmark: To add something extra, let's pass on bookmarks with the book. It can't be just any bookmark, though; it has to be a ticket. A theatre or museum ticket, public transport, tourist attraction, nature reserve ... anything unique to your area would be great. If you could upload a picture of the ticket with your release note, even better. That would help turning the online journal into a scrapbook of unique, local tickets, tracking the book's journey. You are welcome to keep the ticket included by the previous reader, as long as you replace it with a local ticket from your area. If you don't have a ticket to include as bookmark, please forward the one you received from the previous reader on to the next reader.

(Edited September 2014 to add: This arrangement has evolved somewhat. Nobody so far has kept any of the tickets. Also good. The book now carries its own collection along with it, telling local stories of all the places it has been to.)

And we're off!

Mailed by airmail to jmsmom at 11:00 on 2011-11-11, in memory of all who lost their lives in whatever war on whatever side. *

Happy journey, little book!

Local ticket included as bookmark: Table Mountain Cableway. Bought on Worker's Day 2000. It has served me well as bookmark for 11 years, and I trust it will continue to do so for you.

Edited 2012-11-11 to add: It was exactly a year later that I realised there was another connection between this book, the day the ray started, and Remembrance Day (also known as Poppy Day): the beautiful flowers on the book's cover can only be red poppies!

Journal Entry 5 by jmsmom at Newalla, Oklahoma USA on Monday, November 21, 2011
Book arrived today. I need to finish one, then will get right on it. Should be this week.

Journal Entry 6 by jmsmom at Newalla, Oklahoma USA on Tuesday, November 22, 2011
This was a really quick and easy read. I enjoyed all 5 stories. Package Tour and Excitement both sounded very familiar to me, I'm thinking I may have read them somewhere else.

I'm pm ing ravencat for an address and hope to get this book on its way soon. Thank you Stoepbrak for sharing with me.

Journal Entry 7 by jmsmom at Newalla, Oklahoma USA on Friday, November 25, 2011
So many places around here don't give you an actual ticket any more, just a receipt. It's been a couple years since I've been anywhere with an actual ticket and don't seem to have any still around. The most recent place I've been is the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History at the University of Oklahoma campus in Norman. Since they didn't give me an actual ticket, I'll leave the previous ticket in but will include the brochure they gave us along with the receipt in case anyone is interested.

Besides the usual things, dinosaur bones, the early people of Oklahoma (native Americans of various tribes), children's hands on area, etc... they usually have a traveling exhibit. The one we saw was Wolf to Woof. Being huge dog lovers that is the main reason my daughter and I went.

Mailed today to Originalmulli in Wales. I hope you enjoy this little book. I have included a ticket from the stage show "Billy Elliot" which my husband and I attended last February at the Canon Theatre in Toronto. It was a wonderful show. Sorry, I am not able to upload the ticket here. It isn't fancy looking, but I was pleased to be able to include it as part of this bookray.

This arrived just before Christmas and I was just way too busy to do anything before we went off on long travels. Looking forward to starting to read it tomorrow.

Edt: here is the ticket included by the previous reader, which I have scanned for her.

Journal Entry 16 by Originalmulli at Newcastle Emlyn, Wales United Kingdom on Monday, January 23, 2012
I really enjoyed this book, a very pleasant collection of romance/relationship stories always with a bit of a twist. The first one, described in the synopsis, is probably the most predictable - I'm glad I saw past that to request this book as the others are all much more interesting! Maeve Binchy is not an author I've ever been interested in but maybe I will have to look up some more of her work.

I'm not good at keeping hold of tickets so I've included a small brochure from a local tourist attraction, a Victorian electric railway.

This is packaged up and ready to leave as soon as I receive the next address.

A mysterious parcel arrived yesterday... An envelope with a foreign sender addy, but a Croatian "postage paid..." sticker over the foreign one. Weird to say the least.
Upon opening it I found the wee "Cross Lines" book and the accompanying ticket-bookmarks. :)
Still puzzled about that Croatian postage sticker!

Anyway... While this book is tiny and looks like a fast read, I'll be going on holidays in a few days, so it'll have to wait till I return at the beginning of July. Will read it promptly when I get back and send on to the next reader.

PS - thanks for the lovely card, storm0103. LOVE your handwriting! :D

and they were a great read for when travelling on public transport. ;)

The book is now in the care of the Post Office, on its way to Can-Toi-Tete in Germany.
Enjoy! :)

As I didn't have time to visit anything that gives out tickets, and our transport tickets are no longer of the paper kind, I threw in the boarding pass from my recent trip to Italy. It's plain and a little ugly, but it was the best I could do. And where I'm now I have no scanner, so no image either. Sorry. :(

The rest of the tickets/brochures are travelling with the book, so Can-Toi-Tete, you decide what you want to keep and what you want to send on. :)

I don't usually like short stories very much, but I enjoyed this book, it's ironic and I liked its humor. We always find two characters who cross their lives... or maybe not.

The apprenticeship is the one I liked least and something curious happened with Cross lines. I began to read Up in the air, a book about a man who spends his time in airports, planes and hotels. Martin and Kay met in an airport too. When I came back to Up in the air, I didn't know what facts belong to one or the other.

Thanks a lot, Stoepbrak. I'm waiting for FallenAngels address. I'll send it as soon as I get it.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

Sent to daffodil-2 in England. It was a nice little book, my mom and I enjoyed it very much.

I'm not sending a ticket, but a "menu" in postcard format from a local sandwich place, maybe you can recognize some of the food ;)

Journal Entry 61 by wingdaffodil-2wing at North Walsham, Norfolk United Kingdom on Wednesday, September 18, 2013
Arrived in the post this morning after its long journey from Peru. Thank you to all past readers and especially to the bookcrosser who sent it to me-
It has quite a collection of interesting tickets plus a postcard with it now and I shall be adding my own contribution before I send it on. Will read and pass on asap.

Review 20/9/2013 Finished the book today. I realised I had read one of the stories before so it must have been contained in another book of short stories. I enjoyed the stories but feel that Maeve Binchy's talents were more suited to full length novels which I always like better in general anyway. I don't feel that I get to know the characters sufficiently in short stories and they, of necessity, have to go along at a very quick pace which I can't always keep up with at my advanced age! I have read and enjoyed almost everything she has written-my favourites being Light A Penny Candle and Evening Class.

Sending off to the next on the list on Monday.

Journal Entry 63 by Boekentrol at Leeuwarden, Fryslân (Friesland) Netherlands on Friday, September 27, 2013
This little book has arrived safely with me :-)

I intend to upload the picture of the article later with this JE, and the picture of my ticket with the JE in which I'll say what I think of this book.

Journal Entry 64 by Boekentrol at Leeuwarden, Fryslân (Friesland) Netherlands on Sunday, October 6, 2013
Despite it wasn't this book's turn yet, I started reading it, because it was so thin. A nice in between read, I thought.
Only to come to the conclusion, that I've read the Dutch edition earlier this year :-) I liked it, the stories are nice, short and recognizable. Thank you for sharing, stoepbrak.

As promised, I upload my ticket here. It is a movie ticket of the first one ever my son went to alone with two of his friends. Milestones....

Journal Entry 65 by Boekentrol at Leeuwarden, Fryslân (Friesland) Netherlands on Sunday, October 6, 2013
There seems to be a problem with uploading pictures to the JE's. I'll look into it, I hope to be able to upload soon.

Will PM Beitaljawzaa for their address.

I held the book back for a suitable ticket: a ticket for the "Krimi-Tram" (the Thriller Tram or Streetcar). A couple of authors - Sunil Mann & Christine Brand - read from their books during the tram ride. This was during the yearly 4-day book festival in Zurich "Zürich liest '13" (Zürich reads 2013).

The little one's now off to Dundee to Carmendoran.
Enjoy!

Journal Entry 74 by wingBookworm-ladywing at Madrid, Madrid Spain on Friday, January 10, 2014
A really enjoyable little book; I had already read some of the short stories, I think that "Package Tour" was included in "The Return Journey". Anyway, always a pleasure to read _or re-read -Ms Binchy's work.
I like her characters, particularly the female ones; and her stories always make you think, and sometimes leave you smiling.
Thanks a lot, Stoepbrak, I include a bus ticket from Spain ("Metrobus"), which I have used for ten trips on buses or the underground. I am not taking anything, I like the idea of this assorted set of tickets travelling together.
I have QueenSissi's address, and the book will soon be on its way to her. :)

**This is the first time I've been able to go online in months. I obviously, finally, sent this book on, but was unable to make release notes. I did not have any transit tickets to add to the package, so I added Canadian Tire money (can only be spent at a Canadian Tire or occasionally accepted at Canadian garage sales) and a ticket to the movies.

Enjoyed all five [very short] stories, Cross Lines maybe more, and will seek another encounter with Maeve Binchy.

The "ticket" is for the stage play War Horse. The actual ticket was a boring computer-generated one, so I opted for the poster picture instead. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_Horse_(play)

Journal Entry 99 by Mietie at Tshwane - Pretoria, Gauteng South Africa on Saturday, January 10, 2015

Always something to learn when reading Maeve Binchy, but one has to be sensitive to detect it. Also, don't think you have figured out how a story will finish; there is often a twist in the tale.

The picture uploaded herewith — of Table Mountain — served as napkin ring in the aeroplane on our way to Cape Town.
