This book is entirely held together by the character of the protagonist. Stephen is a misfit with a criminal record, and a difficult background. In this story of suspense, Stephen has to struggle with notions of responsibility and loyalty - to his family, his foster family, his employers as tries to work at different jobs. Throughout the book, we see Stephen very ready to take responsibility for his animals, but will this teach him responsibility in other fields? Or will his feelings of responsibility toward the eponymous beast cause him to transgress in other ways?
