I was really looking forward to reading this book - what with all the hype, and several friends who've loved it - but I didn't like it that much. The construction - we 'meet' Em and Dex every 15th of July over a twenty year period - irritated me. It was too episodic, didn't provide enough depth or detail to their story. Far from lovable, I found Em and Dex simply annoying and not that likeable - I just wanted to shake them, wanted them to get something out of life. Too much insecurity, self loathing, lack of enjoyment - it was all a bit grim.
