Intelectual, escritor, ensaísta, professor de literatura comparada na Universidade da Columbia, Edward Said (1935-2003) foi um exemplo de humanismo, cidadania e de tolerância para todo o Médio Oriente. O seu percurso biográfico é o retrato de um Médio Oriente plural e universalista, hoje esquecido por quase todos, em virtude do conflito permanente que assola a região desde 1947.

"Orientalism", escrito em 1978, é a sua obra mais famosa e, proventura a mais importante. Ensaio sobre o mito do Oriente, o livro é a visão de alguém que vindo desse espaço - mais imaginado do que real - consegue desmontar as diferentes representações criadas pelo Ocidente sobre o Orientalismo para demonstrar o quanto perigoso é a construção de identidades e de visões simplistas do Outro.

Em Agosto de 2003, Said mostrava-se amargo com os acontecimentos dos últimos 25 anos desde da publicação da sua obra, em especial com os sucedidos após o 11 de Setembro de 2001.
Em lugar da compreensão civilizacional que advogava, nunca antes a visão estreita e míope do Outro tivera um papel tão preponderante no pensamento "Ocidental" e "Oriental". Mas, por isso mesmo, a sua obra deve ser hoje objecto de leitura e de reflexão por todos nós.

University Professor at Columbia University, where he taught English and Comparative Literature, Edward W. Said was a brilliant ensaist and an humanist. A defender of the palestian cause, he was also a tolerant man,being known for is dream of a free and independent Palestine, where the israelian and the palestian people would live in peace. A living example of this was the foundation by Said and the israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim, of the "West Eastern Divan", an orchestra of musicians from different states of the Middle East.

"Orientalism", his most famous book, is an highly acclaimed overview of Western attitudes towards the East, and one that has become a canonical text of cultural studies. Essential to understand how our views of the Other, are understood by the other himself. A "must" for those looking for the cultural seeds behind the oriental/occidental conflict after the 11th September, although first published 25 years ago.
