I've enjoyed the over-the-top 1962 film since I first saw it, but had never read the book it's based on, so I was glad to find this yellowed-but-sound '70s paperback online.

Later: A very disturbing tale of a washed-up former child star, dark and twisted. While it's difficult to know how I'd have responded to this book if I'd never seen the film, I was impressed both by the level of creeping horror in the book and by the fidelity of the screen adaptation - it's fairly rare for a film to be this faithful to the plot, characters, and mood! The book does include more of Baby Jane's point of view than the film does, but while it adds some sympathy for her - at first - it only makes her subsequent actions more horrifying. Wonderfully dark chiller, here!

[There's a TV Tropes page for this as well, but beware of spoilers!]

I only saw this film once, in the late sixties, but it's still quite vivid in memory. First, Bette Davis' appalling costumes and makeup - when I checked IMDB and found the costumes had won an Oscar, I felt good that I'd noticed the "right" detail. And I'm in awe that Miss Davis, an actress of grace and beauty, totally sacrificed all vanity to immerse herself so successfully in a loathsome character.

The second bit is the dead bird under the silver dome on the lunch tray. I can still see Joan Crawford - there must have been some hint to rouse her suspicions - looking back and forth between the tray and her sister's departing back, obviously trying to convince herself 'No, she'd never do anything like THAT,' - and then lifting the cover. One of the most shocking moments in cinema!

I agree with GoryDetails that this and the movie are amazingly close. it's fun to be able to recreate the viewing experience so strongly by reading the book.

But that's just one person's opinion. Future readers, what do YOU think of this book?
