I received this book today as part of the International Roundabout - thanks a lot for sending it again!
I have never read a book by Philip Roth until now, looking forward to getting to know this author...
12.12.2011
As I said: first book by Philip Roth. I like his style so far, will read one or another if his books as well.
Right at the beginning I thought: The fears of the overprotecting father have to come true... But honestly I would not have thought of such an end...
Hope the others will enjoy this book as well!

Another surprise in the ABC roundabout. It's certainly widening my horizons; this is a contender (though how serious a contender I'm not sure) for the Great American Novel. Set in the early 1950s, it documents a teenager's battle to a) get through university despite his father's paranoia; and b) avoid the Korean War. If that sounds thoroughly depressing, it's because it is. I could appreciate it as a competent and convincing piece of writing, but I will probably never read it again. I think it's partly because I'm feeling guilty about not liking the narrator much...

This is a remarkable read. A terrible tragedy intermingled with romance and comdey. Religion of all kinds receives Roth's full indignation.
Thank you so much for sharing it with me.

Bookcrossing is so great for getting me to read other authors that I would not normally read. This book brought into sharp relief how easy it is for people to totally change their lives by the sway of their actions.

The book is written well, I enjoyed the writing style and most of the book. I did skip parts of the political monolog when Marcus was in the Dean's office, because I found that too boring. And why didn't they give any more detail/explanation on why Olivia won't talk about her parents? Otherwise, I really enjoyed the book.
Off to the next reader within a day or two.

I liked this book. It is very, very sad, but an enjoyable read. At first I had no idea how the main character, that was reflecting on his life over the past year, attending a vcollege further away from home to escape his over-protective father fitted into the story himself. A few hints on how things would turn out, but that was it.
When he started calling others, at some point in the story, only then I got it.... a little oopsy there, I guess.
Sad book, like I sad. All the boy fears comes true. He tries to escape from his father, who lives in constant fear of what might happen to his son, but doesn't succeed. He more or less takes the 'virus' with him and starts worrying himself. Trying to outrun fate, he runs straight into its arms....
Thank you for sharing, ahabraken!
You got me to read my first Philip Roth. And I think I'll be reading more books by him in the future :-)
Book will be travelling on to the next in line soon.

21.06.2012: I found this book ok, not too good but maybe that was because sometimes it was not so easy to read for me. Reading it in German language might have helped to enjoy it more. Anyway, the story was good, kind of weird sometimes and sad in the end. In the beginning I liked Marcus a lot but I liked him less with each chapter. But well, he was so young so thats an excuse for him I guess.

14.08.2012:
==========
I recently picked up this little book--my first exposure to Philip Roth. Short, concise, yet rich and descriptive. When you read this book, you are carried away into a different time, when things were simpler, yet so much more complex.
The ending caught me by surprise--and the sheer irony of it all reminded me of life itself--no matter what happens, or what we do, life just marches on... Sometimes in the way we least expect it.

I'm not sure if I could say I enjoyed this book. Marcus iritated me and his father seemed too over the top. Lots of other things niggled me too. I quite enjoyed the description of the "panties" night though.

After the RR, I got this book back and finally read it myself. Yes - I did send it out, without ever having read it or without ever reading a book by Philip Roth. The book was both a positive surprise and a disappointment. I always thought Roth would write very difficult proza - but that was the possitive surprise: the book is very readable and Roth has a great writing style. I will pick up another one of his books, that is for sure. But the ending of the book, that really disappointed me - I can't really say why, as that would give the ending away - but that could have been better.
Will try to send this book on - I think more people should get to know Roth.
