Amazon Editorial Review:
"If you think you are in charge of your chickens, prepare for a change in the pecking order. From Fowl Play to Hen-tertainment, in this hilarious collection by Diane Parker the chickens show us who are really in charge, and what they're really plotting inside their coops! Don't worry about the morning after the night before. Unmade nests, broken eggs and scattered food -your human will not even notice the difference and they always have spare time to clean up after you. Free range means you have the right to roam. However you choose to do it, escape on a regular basis and refuse to return until you are ready. Try to tip your food hopper up so all the corn spills. That way your human will have to refill it on a more regular basis."

I chose this book from a virtual bookbox because of the first sentence: "Humans always think they are in charge." Of course I guessed that it is something from a animal point of view, but I kinda thought about cats or dogs... Well, it will certainly be interesting to look into chicken's mind. Thank you so much Sumako, I already got a good laugh :)

This was really a quick and entertaining read, even if I don't personally know a single chicken...

Chicken make lousy human-owners. Far too easy tricks.
(But some accurate observations on chicken, though!)

Thanks! There is a dog trainer in Finland who trains people to use clicker as a training method by making them train hens first with it. You learn how quick YOU have to be, cause with a hen the timing is everything. And you get better results with a dog as well, if you don't confuse it with too slow clicking.
About the book's future - well, I know three people who have hens, so this might go to one of them, depending what the book is about. Or it might indeed travel to one of the Birthday Group people - I have to see what their wishes are regarding chickens.

Do you remember the old Madness song? It plays in my head a bit altered now: "Welcome to the House of Hen..."
I have been a hen-sitter twice for twenty odd hens and their cockerel. On the first summer they had an old-fashioned incubator where I had to turn the eggs twice a day by shifting the position of the boxes inside the apparatus. I also had to check the humidity and temperature. On the second summer they had bought an American incubator, which needed only water refill twice a day - it hold the right temperature and turned the eggs and while doing that it played a little melody! They also had automatized the curtains of the House of Hen by then, they opened at nine and shut sometime during the evening. They had had complaints from their neighbour about too early birds and the missus told me that all her friends thought it is so romantic that her husband called her every morning from his car. Had they known that he only reminded her to open the hen house curtains (ok, she had forgotten it - ONCE), they might not envy her. And after doing it manually for half a year they got automatic curtains.
So, comparing to these luxuries this book gives a bit too light and casual advice to the Modern Hen, who probably wants to join the Hens' Lib, run around the yard all day, flirt with the cockerel and drop Chick Lit everywhere instead of sitting on her eggs. Let the American musical Nanny do her job.

When I was around ten years old I read a book about keeping hens which we did not have. (I read the gardening books too.) Maybe my parents had dreamed about having hens as my son-in-law does now. His mother has half a dozen hens during the summer time. They are lovely! The book I read as a child gave a rather dark view of keeping hens. It seemed very difficult to me. Maybe because the book was not about summer hens. My friend near Porvoo has 5 to 10 all-year-hens depending on how many chicks the hens get. She has two roosters, Bill and Bull. They are very beautiful.
Thank you for this lovely book!

Reading this book brought back memories of hens and cockerels I have met in the past. I love the illustrations in the book. I wonder who will have the book next.
