A fun read, a few laughs, good for planes, trains, and automobiles. Definitely NOT a thinkpiece, but a jolly memoir nonetheless.

Enjoy!!!

I left this book near Quattro Formaggio across from Carlyle. I hope the crazy lady doesn't steal it/the owners don't throw it out...

Journal Entry 3 by wingResQgeekwing at Alexandria, Virginia USA on Wednesday, October 5, 2011
I had just gotten back to my desk from lunch when I saw the two release alerts in my inbox. Both releases were nearby, so I thought I'd take a quick walk to see if I could find them (not that I expected to...I've not had much luck hunting wild releases in the past!). Both books were still in the wild when I got there, but I left the other in the wild, since it was a book I had originally registered and released. This one looked like something I might enjoy, so I picked it up to read and pass along.

Welcome to BookCrossing, WhatsYourSine!

Journal Entry 4 by wingResQgeekwing at Alexandria, Virginia USA on Thursday, October 27, 2011
While I love to travel and enjoy getting away from the usual tourist spots to experience something more authentic about the places I visit, I must confess that I enjoy my creature comforts far too much to have any desire to experience the type of travel described in this book. The stories here are about traveling on a truly low budget, in ways that the vast majority of travellers would probably find objectionable for any number of levels. Yet the author clearly revels in her experiences, finding excitement and happiness in the adventure that almost inherently follows from the nature of her travel style.

The low budget nature of Ms. Halliday’s travels also means that she visits many place that I would probably never consider visiting, because of concerns about safety, or the sheer lack of modern facilities that I simply would find unacceptable. All of which means that this book has a value, in that it provides me a glimpse into these places, a chance to vicariously visit places that I probably will never see in person. So, while I may not embrace her style of travel, I’m glad that she both enjoys it and writes about her experiences.

Snapped this one up at the meet-up today. I recall being interested in this book when I saw the release notes on the side bar last fall, and my hopes were raised when I saw that ResQgeek had caught it (I figured I could cadge it from him when he had read it). I was quite excited to see SqueakyChu pull it out of her bag and made sure I got my hands on it before anyone else even saw it.

Journal Entry 9 by wing6of8wing at Silver Spring, Maryland USA on Thursday, June 28, 2012
I told you I would not wait long to read this, and I didn't. It had it's moments and it's humor (the lip-boosting fashion show/demo in Paris was humorous and horrifying!), but not as much as I was hoping. Once again I found myself wondering exactly how out of touch I am (square, unhip, backwards, whatever the phrase is) because, though I would consider myself an educated person and a free-thinker, but it would never occur to me to seek out drugs or sexual exhibitions in a foreign country, whether legal there or not. I am constantly surprised by how much time the writers of these types of books spend on these activities when I have never had any trouble finding adventures and wacky encounters without them.

What to do with the book now? I am contemplating a themed wild release.
