woot! I hardly could believe that such a book was still on the book table yesterday evening! In spite of fantasy-snatcher Xaradoc who was lurking around :D Thank you very much, micat. You made my day ^__^
Woah! what an engrossing read. I'm already addicted. Jones smartly creates parallel worlds and all the conjuring bases on somewhat like quantum magic. She doesn't give away plain receipes or spells. Magic is merely described in its impacts, but she invents so persuasively that you believe everything in the end and you don't mind the odd unlikeliness here and there. Truly enchanting, often hilarious. And I'm very glad that the cats always survived :D
In comparison to these fine-layered novels Harry Potter appears downright clumsy. Besides: I think I know now where Rowling did pick her ideas ...
A pity D.W. Jones had only one life ;_;
Now I must go on search of the other Chrestomanci books. Urgently.

lotta_torkel will be the next addict ^__^
came back to me, alas without a journal entry :/
I am tempted to place this book into my children's books collection ...

drat, I forgot that I already wrote a JE and started to write one since I've just read it ... again. Here it is nevertheless. Thought it would be a pity to throw it away ;)
The first two of the seven Chrestomanci books play in Chrestomanci castle, a big magical building of the kind where nobody ever can be sure how many rooms actually exist. It's the seat of the government now: Chrestomanci is the title of the ruler. A Chrestomanci is by nature the most powerful enchanter, since he has nine lives.
As every hedge-wizard knows, the worlds are numbered and parallel. That means, for every living person exist probably eleven similar persons in the parallel worlds who were born at the same time and have similar character traits. When it occurs that some of the doppelgangers are not born, it can happen that all those lives cumulate in one person, so that this person eventually has nine lives. It's very rare to have more than two or three, even in world twelve where these stories happened.
"Charmed Life" is the story of Cat and his sister Gwendolin, two orphaned, distant relatives who were taken in by the Chrestomanci, to be raised in the castle.
"The Lives of Christopher Chant" tells of the time when the current Crestomanci was a young boy, and how he became the highest of enchanters.
Both children have been neglected by their parents, both detest the castle and the associated schooling and must prove themselves in fantastic adventures.
I found it fascinating that in the second story Throgmorton, the cat, always says WONG. Not meow. Really "wong", from the depths of the thorax. I can hear it right away :D
This is reserved for Ehrentanz.
