Her father, the minister, taught her about God, but it was the gypsy who taught her about love.
Set in a small village in the English countryside, this is the story of a secluded, sensitive rector's daughter who yearns for meaning beyond the life to which she seems doomed. When she meets a handsome young gipsy whose life appears different from hers in every way, she is immediately smitten and yet still paralyzed by her own fear and social convention. Not until a natural catastrophe suddenly, miraculously sweeps away the world as she knew it does a new world of passion open for her.
Recognized as a masterpiece in which D. H. Lawrence had distilled and purified his ideas about sexuality and morality, The Virgin and the Gipsy has become a classic and is one of Lawrence's most electrifying short novels - a dazzling, first rate novel that will enchant all lovers of the story-telling art, by the author of Lady Chatterley's Lover. With its verbal precision, its remarkable insight into complex personal relationships, and with vivid awareness of the physical world, this short novel provides an excellent introduction to D.H. Lawrence's fiction. Lawrence's spirit is infused by all his tenderness, passion, and knowledge of the human soul.
The book was written during the last months of 1925 after the Lawrences had returned from Europe from the Taos ranch for the last time.

Never found the D.H Lawrence plaque or statue so ended up bringing it home with me. Thought I may as well read it before letting it go.

Picked up from the book buffet.
My first D.H.Lawrence book and I am pleasantly surprised. Sometimes when I pick up well rated books by 'Great authors', I worry a little. Because even though I'm supposed to like it, sometimes I don't! And naturally I review it saying that.
Anyway, I genuinely enjoyed this little book. Beautiful story telling, great characters all within this tiny little book. It took me a few pages to get absorbed and then I was in. And I don't think I can say much more without giving away too much of it. Its short, its good and it's worth reading.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Travelling in my Wrap it up Bookbox.
Well this author I have definitely read but not for a long time. In fact, I am not sure that I have not read this short story previously but it must be at least forty years ago!! A spell on tbr awaits first though!
HMMM. Well tbr did not see much of this!
I was correct, I had read this many years ago but was happy to re-read it after all this time. Oddly, I vaguely remembered the book until about half way through and had not recalled the ending at all. I do however, recall the wonderfully lyric writing. Spare in its description yet beautifully evocative and precise in its identification of human frailties, this is just good writing - full stop. Very glad I had the opportunity to re-read this and also a little sorry I had not re-read this before my random bookbox went out as this little slip of a book would have been a welcome addition to that.
No plans for this at present, so I will put it on available, but who knows, it may well go out soon as an additional small offering to a small parcel.
