In 1975 Theroux spends several months traveling around Europe and Asia on trains. The book is about the places he goes through and the people he meets on the trains. It is interesting to see how some things have changed and some haven't. I am looking forward to reading his 2008 book Ghost Train to the Eastern Star, in which he repeats the trip.

Selected this from the book box because I have enjoyed his other books. In fact, I am putting in Riding the Iron Rooster, his book about taking the train across China. Seemed like a fair swap.

Interesting read, in that the journey was undertaken some 40 years ago and I don't know that much would have changed on most of these railways, unless they ceased to exist. Probably the most interesting part were the people he met along the way and the glimpses he got into the lives of average people in those countries.

I wish that he had done the Trans-Siberian Railway leg earlier in his journey, because I am not sure how much his perceptions were skewed by it being at the end of 4 months of train travel and homesickness at Christmas time. I have always wanted to ride the Trans-Siberian and I found this portion of the book quite depressing -- makes me worried I would not enjoy it at all.

I will set this book aside to go to the next BCinDC meet up, as quite a few of the folks are into travel books and might be interested in this if they haven't already read it.
