FROM BACK COVER: Thomas Alva Edison headed a small research laboratory in an obscure town called Menlo Park, New Jersey. In 1878, his fame was already echoing around the world. On December 6, 1877, surrounded by his staff, Edison placed tin foil on the cylinder for the first phonograph. He began turning the handle and shouted into the diaphragm the first thing that came to mind: "Mary had a little lamb, its fleece was white as snow..."
Tom is one of my favorite inventors and I have been to the lab in West Orange, New Jersey many times. It's very cool to see the old stuff there. Three streets in a row in Bloomfield are named after him: Thomas, Alva and Edison Street. Lot's of kids from Carteret School lived on Edison Street.
