I once read this book as a
ringbook and loved it, so I bought this copy for myself. I also liked
Half Broke Horses where Jeannette Walls tells her grandmother's story.
Now I registered this Glass Castle of mine and offered it to displace
this bookring where the remaining [EDIT: and some new] participants are:
3. jujuks - Portugal
4. Icila - France
5. Nakipa - Portugal
6. penelopewanders - Switzerland
7. salvami - Ireland
8. cherryj - Canada
9. Back to imawinn2 - U.S.A.

I'm not really sure what to think of this book, I enjoyed reading it but I just can't seem to understand how people could possibly choose to live the way they did. Or how someone could ever like the thought of being homeless.
14 November: Nakipa won't answer my pm's so I guess I'll send the book to Canada as soon as I have cherryj's address.
1st December: I can't make a release note on this book but I sent it yesterday to Icila in France.

Thanks Jujuks, I'm looking forward to readind it again after having read Half Broke Horses http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/8589793/
Nakipa wrote a post in the forum after an ISO :
Hi there
by Nakipa 3 days ago (12/3/2011)
I am currently in Argentina, using a very fleeting internet connection they have here in the port of Comodoro Rivadavia. I´m so sorry that you had to come to the forum to look for me but I had no chance to send a message to everyone... I´ll be back (hopefully) in about 3 weeks and I´ll make up for any trouble I might have caused.
And in case I don´t get internet ever again before christmas, MERRY CHRISTMAS ALL! :D "
I think it w'll be fair to let her have a new chance before sending the book to Canada.

It's a strange memoir, one that sticks with you when you are reading it in bed, thinking how comfortable it feels to actually have a bed.

Very moving memoir... Impressive how people can survive and grow strong and creative, despite apparently crippling conditions, however well-meaning and well-intentioned those who created these conditions may have been.
I have taken it on holiday with me, and will try to send from here.

I was very impressed by her way of telling stories. Before I started this book, I kind of imagined it would be sad, leaving me very uncomfortable. I found that her parents were quite eccentric and couldn't really understand why they had to live like that, but I enjoyed reading this memoir and I even found some parts amusing. (when Dad writes long letters to publishers till dictionary people stop writing back to him. etc.)
I PMed next reader for address :)

An absolutely astonishing memoir. It's rare that I give books 10 stars, but this one had me reading until well in the early hours of the morning, and then during the day I couldn't wait to get home to pick it up again.
I appreciated the way Walls told her story. She was very matter-of-fact about it, this is the way it was for her growing up. She didn't run off on any tangents that were self-deprecating or pitying. I felt it was a take from it what you will story, and that it was cathartic for her just to write what happened, as opposed to analyzing herself.

The Glass Castle arrived in my mailbox today. Many thanks to all of you for making this a successful reading journey. I want to especially thank ruzena for providing this replacement copy when my copy went missing in action. I enjoyed reading your thoughts on Jeannette Walls story.
If you want to read another one of her books, may I suggest Half Broke Horses. Ms Walls tells the tale of her high spirited and no-nonsense grandma. You will see where the author got her "gumption" to survive her poor upbringing.

Very quickly I wanted to reach inside this book and start slapping that unbelievably arrogant so-called father until his head fell off and rolled into a ditch. "You selfish bastard!" I wanted to scream. "You sniveling thief! You cowardly, drunken liar!" Nor was the mother much better. Both of them were so wrapped up in their own perception of themselves as daring, romantic adventurers that they barely noticed that their children were freezing and starving, let alone doing anything about providing food and shelter.
I say all this because despite myself, I couldn't stop reading. Jeannette Walls is an amazing writer. She tells the story very factually, without blame or bitterness. I can see why this book is on so many wish lists. I'm glad I read it, but I'm also glad I'm done now and ready to pass it along.

A tell all memoir of an awful childhood by an unflinching observer. This one made me mad, mostly on behalf of the author. I am not quite sure what the point is. I guess I am just stuck in some of the passages where Jeannette is furious about what is happening, but can't do anything but vow to keep going. Ah well, destined for another reader. Thanks for sharing.
