This is The Dreyfus Affair, but written from a totally fictional point of view. A woman comes to a lawyer's office in Paris wishing to hire him to investigate the conviction of her friend's husband. The lawyer, who hasn't been involved with anything like this since he was with the Communards as a young man, assumes she is looking for the famous lawyer upstairs. He does the investigation she wants (assuming that she is Mme Dreyfus) risking his marriage, his profession and his relationship with his mistress all at the same time. MS Taylor does a vivid job of portraying fin de siecle (19eme siecle) Paris, the attitudes, the clothes, the habits, the military, the French. I thought there would be no surprises because we know how that affair ended, but after all, our characters are fictional so there are a number of surprises in store.

Enjoyed this a lot. Yes, agree, even though most of the characters are fictional, still not all as you'd expect. Well done - and a Canadian author too.
