Inspector Harry Hole is in charge of a team investigating a missing woman - feared dead. The case (and indeed a few more cases) have similarities to some which go back 15 or so years - as discovered by Katrine Bratt, who is a new detective on Harry's team.
With twists and shocks all the way through this book, I was kept awake a couple of nights on the trot trying to finish it; I kept thinking I'd sussed out "whodunnit" but then got sidetracked by someone else.
Beautifully translated from Norwegian, I would have given this book a 10 but for 2 facts: I did get a touch confused in the first few of chapters with dates and locations, and the Norwegian names were a touch confusing - many of which began with "H"!

Loved it! A really good gripping read that had me hooked throughout though I had worked out some of the connections earlyish on (not saying which ones as don't want to drop any spoilers for future readers!)
Harry is such a credible character & I really liked Katrine Bratt, especially her slightly cocky attitude, & it makes me hope that I'll come across her again. And was I reading more into the mould man than was really there? Well, I guess I'll have to wait & see on both scores - can't wait for the next instalment although I've still got books 2 & 3 to read!:o)

Picked up this book as I was enjoying Scandinavian crime fiction tv and films such as Wallander, the Stieg Larson trilogy etc and fancied checking out a book in this growing genre. I was not disappointed, not as dark as the Dragon Tattoo films, it was much closer in tone to the Wallander tv series and would recommend to fans of that series. Perhaps a little too long but when it's so well written you don't mind. Highly recommended.
