This memoir is amazing. The movie is astonishing, and the book is ten times better! I couldn't sleep after reading it. The account of Carcaterra's months in the Wilkinson Home for Boys is chilling and heartbreaking, and so well crafted. A real page turner.
Including this one in JennyC1230's Kitchen Sink Book Box. Enjoy!
I am taking this out of the spring cleaning book box.
I read this book a number of years ago and believed every word. This time around I found myself skeptical. It reminded me of James Frey's A Million Little Pieces. It was too stylized and unlikely; I could believe it may have had its roots in truth but that doesn't make the story a full truth. The court case seemed particularly unlikely. It is a pretty well-written story but I don't see it as THE TRUTH, just a version thereof most likely. It could, in fact, be lies from beginning to end, but there probably is some truth there. I googled the Wilkinson Home for Boys and found that I was not the only one who was skeptical. The NY Times published an article about doubts that were being expressed and as far as I could tell the story could not be verified. Mr. Carcaterra maintains that it is the truth with names and dates changed.

It has arrived in Lisbon today. Looking forward to reading this one. Thank you so much biisbsw for sharing this book with me! :D
This is very disturbing book, even more when the author writes it as a true story. Even if it was embellished I think we know enough of the world to believe that these abuses happen much too often to children and it makes you sad to live in this world.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
This book is going out as part of the Tasteletter game. I hope you enjoy!
This book was sent to me as one of my choices in a Tasteletter group. I got it a month ago and forgot I was supposed to journal it when it arrived. Sorry about that! Anyway, I didn't realize it was an autobiography. I'm looking forward to reading it because it looks really interesting.
