Journal Entry 1 by dancing-dog from Cordova, Tennessee USA on Thursday, September 08, 2011
from amazon.com: Eighteen years old and completely alone, Rosemary arrives in New York from Tasmania with little other than her love of books and an eagerness to explore the city. Taking a job at a vast, chaotic emporium of used and rare books called the Arcade, she knows she has found a home. But when Rosemary reads a letter from someone seeking to “place” a lost manuscript by Herman Melville, the bookstore erupts with simmering ambitions and rivalries. Including actual correspondence by Melville, The Secret of Lost Things is at once a literary adventure and evocative portrait of a young woman making a life for herself in the city. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From the reviews I've read on amazon and Goodreads, it seems that people either loved this book or hated it - I'm somewhere in between. I loved the bookstore setting and the quirky and sometimes creepy co-workers working with Rosemary. And I was drawn to keep reading to see what would happen to her. But I hated that Rosemary was so naive and clueless that she almost seemed unintelligent to me. I don't know what time period it took place in but people in Tasmania are not that unsophisticated. The ending fell a little flat for me also - I was expecting a bit more. reserved for nimrodiel
