I bought this from the library booksale shelf. It had apparently been culled from the books for teenagers. If you look, you can still make out "Birmingham Centre for the Child" stamped on the edges of the pages. Presumably someone thought: oh, it's about pop music, teenagers will like that. I doubt it somehow. Thirtysomething 6music listeners maybe, but teenagers no.
I enjoyed it at the start. It was easy to read and funny. It has some nice little observations (for example, his parents' dismissive pronunciation of "pop" music). Then, about 2/3 of the way through, I realised it was exactly the kind of angsty, men-do-this-women-do-that whining about (*facepalm*) relationships that I really, really dislike. He can't commit! She wants to change him! Oh, quelle flipping surprise. Overall, the book is like the main character's taste in music: nice enough but unadventurous and a bit boring.

Thanks very much for the holiday gift shnedwards!
After spending nearly 2 months reading A Suitable Boy, it was great to be able to read this book in just a few days. I enjoyed it even though the main character is pretty selfish most of the time, although that may have been part of the point of the book.
Given to my lovely sister in law in Chagford.
