This is the first book in an extremely well told trilogy. It is a book I have recomended and loaned out to several friends over the years.

I loved it's mix of ancient Japanese customs with magics and the very feudal country this story is set in. I've read it in print several times since I first stumbled across it, and have also listened to the audio version which was very well done.
