From the cover flap:
"With blood on his hands, Curtis Woolf flees his home in New Mexico for Canada, where he starts a religious commune, the Family. There he heals others and teaches pacifism while enduring the torment of his own damaged soul.

Then his lover, Martha, finds his gun and goes south to discover the truth, whatever that might be. Curtis sets out to bring her back, lest the Family fall apart."

When I read this book, about a year ago, this was a new to me author. And I mean entirely new. I hadn't read anything she might have written previously nor had I heard or read any scuttlebutt/reviews of her work. So I hadn't the foggiest idea what to expect. Often, when I discover a new author, I describe my reaction as being delighted, especially when I think the work I've read is all fresh and dewy. Those are not the terms I'd use with this discovery although the book is most certainly different than anything else I've read. Rather, I'd use the words intriguing, exciting and perhaps even dangerous. I was interested in this book from beginning to end, even though sometimes I did not entirely understand what or why something was happening or even, sometimes, who was who.

As a person who grew up fishing, I adored all the lure references and imagery in this book. I couldn't help but think of myself as a fish attracted by the lure of the story. Following and following wherever it goes and, yet, not totally committed to biting. Every once in a while the lure flashes with its own imperfection and the fish knows there is something not quite right and yet is destined to be attracted into following again.

One of the things I hated and loved at the same time was the author's vocabulary use. Words like susurrus, numinous and mellifluous. Really, who uses words like that? Their use seemed outrageously pompous and yet, if you thought about it, so perfect. Look them up. I did.

Journal Entry 4 by Pooker3 at Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada on Sunday, March 3, 2013
This book has been checked out of the library for the last little while but has returned and is awaiting a new reader. It has, so far, been frustratingly silent about what it has been up to over the last few months.
