Why does an infant die of malnutrition? Why does an eight-year-old hold a knife to his brother's throat? Or a mother push her cherished daughter twenty-three floors to her death? Marc Parent, a city caseworker, searched the streets -- and his heart -- for the answers, and shares them in this powerful, vivid, beautifully written book.

Available for loan.

10 out of 10

Got this book today and have already started reading it! I've already read four cases, and so far the one that affected me the most is the second one. I'm not sure if by writing what I think about it would be a spoiler, but here it is anyway.

Most people would be appalled that a nine year old boy could beat his five year old cousin to death. But if you really think about it, he's a child, he's alone with his younger cousins without any adult supervision, and he was terribly provoked. Most children's ids are strong at this stage and their egos not strong enough. He acted out of instinct, and took out his anger and rage by beating up his cousins, killing one of them. You might think, if he killed at nine years, what will be become when he grows older, a monster? But then again, no, because if you really do think about it, children can become 'natural' killers without adult supervision. If you've ever read The Lord of the Flies, you'll probably understand what I'm rambling about.

It's unfortunate that all these children involved in the book are all just innocent victims of their parents' shortcomings, faults, ignorance...whatever.

I'll probably finish the book soon and I'll write more about it then. Thanks for sharing, JesseBC!!

Just finished reading this, and found it so sad. I have so much admiration for people who do this for a living, because I know I never could. Highly recommended reading.
