The Woman in White (Simple English)

One night, on the road to London, a young drawing master, Walter Hartright, meets a mysterious woman dressed in white and in need of help. But who is she and why is she being followed by two men? And what is her connection with his pupil Laura Fairlie, the woman he secretly loves?
I picked up this book because I read that it is the origin of the modern mystery novel. Even so, I was surprised at how "modern" it sounded. It was told from multiple points of view with each character telling a part of the story as a journal entry.
There were some great characters in this book, like the selfish hypochondriac Mr. Fairlie, and the cunning villian Count Fosco. But my favorite was Marian Halcombe, half-sister to the heroine. She is smart, but ugly and swarthy. Yet, she is a woman of action in a time when women sat in a drawing room and did nothing of real use.
This book was absolutely wonderful. I was completely hooked by the plot. It is a truly recommendation to all looking for a solid Gothic classic.
