The Cat Who Covered the World: The Adventures Of Henrietta And Her Foreign Correspondent
3 journalers for this copy...
Heard about this book somewhere on BC a while back, so added it to my wishlist. I needed a few more books for a bookbox I'm planning to start next year, and I found this book for a good price at Better World Books. So here we are :)
From the cover -
Henrietta was an ordinary New York City cat until she ventured overseas with foreign correspondent Christopher S. Wren and his wife and children. Over seventeen years and tens of thousands of miles, she became a plucky, indispensable companion for the reporter as he covered world events in Moscow, Cairo, Beijing, Ottawa, and Johannesburg.
Wren's often hilarious and sometimes poignant account of an American family's adventures crisscrossing the globe shows them coping with chaos in faraway places - always with the help of their ever-resourceful feline. The result is a charming tale about a spunky curious pet who earned the right to be ranked among the world's most widely traveled cats.

I enjoyed this book very much. Henrietta is very much an adventuress, getting lost in places as diverse as Cairo and Italy. She has her own personality, being unique from other literary cats such as Norton, etal. I loved the little drawings that accompanied this story; I wonder if they were from Wren's children? It amazes me that she was ever able to find her way home, as much as she travelled, charming people of many nationalities and airline passengers alike.
This book will be going out in my Cat Stories bookbox. Hope the next reader enjoys it also.

Mailed out in my Cat Stories bookbox. Enjoy!
Was quite intrigued by the looks of this little book -- and kitty approved of it -- so will add it to Mt TBR.

Enchanting story of an enchanting cat who traveled the world with Wren and his family during his work as a foreign correspondent in Moscow, Cairo, Beijing, and Ottawa. Such a great personality and a strong survivor -- her ability to find her family after being lost in the streets of Cairo was incredible, as was the way she dealt with her PTSD from that experience. I loved the way she charmed guards and officials around the world, the tourists who came to visit her in Beijing, and the fact that her human family came to rate airlines and other countries based on the way she was treated.
Debating between taking this book to the next meet-up for other cat lovers to enjoy or saving for the possible get together in honor of MaryZee at Birdie's.

Took this along to the mini-meet-up we had at Birdie's in honor of MaryZee. I think it went home with SqueakyChu.
This looked like a fun book so I grabbed it! I picked it up from Birdie's Cafe in Westminster, Maryland, at a BC in DC Meet-up.
I'm starting to read this book today for the 2014 BookCrossing Mt. TBR Challenge on LibraryThing.
I am so sad when remembering my friend MaryZee who suddenly died at age 59. I love that I can read one of her books and then pass it along in her memory. When I finish this book, I'll probably circulate it among BCinDC, my local BookCrossing group.
Rest in peace, MaryZee.

This book is just darling. Christopher S. Wren was no slouch. His career as a foreign correspondent for The New York Times spanned years, including his being based at different times in Moscow, Cairo, Beijing, Ottawa, and Johannesburg.
So what is a journalist of such merit doing writing a book about a cat?! Here's the answer in Wren's own words:
"Henrietta's life overseas triggered more mail to me from (New York) Times readers than the most momentous political events I have covered in eighteen years as a foreign correspondent, including Anwar Sadat's visit to Israel and Nelson Mandela's release from prison in South Africa."
Henrietta was the family cat who traveled the world literally with each of Wren's base changes. It was hard to believe the adventures of this feline who had a most unusual, and sometimes challenging, life. She was not confined to her home at most of her residences so she got to meet with the local color. Her most terrifying moments had to do with airline travel and becoming lost in the streets of Cairo. Fortunately, she survived her misadventures. She was a very proud cat, quite cynical of the world of politics, and devoted to her family. For a special treat, read her delightful story.

I'm passing this book along to my daughter and her fiancé, of Halethorpe, Maryland, who are owned by three cats. I think this couple will enjoy reading about Henrietta's escapades!
