I really enjoyed another of the books in this series, The Thong Also Rises, so when I saw this fair-condition softcover at the Used Book Superstore - and especially when I noticed that its contributors include Anne Lamott, Ellen Degeneres, and Sarah Vowell - I couldn't resist!

And it was worth it - another entertaining collection, with anecdotes ranging from truly cringe-worthy subjects (many involving the inadvertent and/or inconvenient release of bodily fluids) to delightful ones. The main lesson to be learned here is that a sense of humor is an essential travel accessory {wry grin}. Whether the authors were commenting on the unusual reliance on euphemisms for "feminine products" in France, quipping about air travel, extolling the surreal wonder (and dust) that is Burning Man, recounting a near-death experience from stampeding elephants, or describing how to wear a chador, they're very entertaining.

Quite a few entries involved difficulties surrounding elimination while traveling, but the one that tickled me most was the article by Kathleen Meyer, author of the hilarious and informative How To Shit in the Woods. Here, she examines the containers used by river runners and horse packers for conveying human waste out of the wild country, as well as other aspects of the... neccessities. (Well, one other entry on a similar topic had me giggling for some time, not so much because of the subject itself but because the story's about the perfect karmic vengeance being visited on someone who's too preoccupied with chatting on a pay phone to tend to the needs of her children; a child takes - um, matters - into its own hands, and - well, it's kinda gross, but also very satisfying, at least from the point of view of the person who was waiting in line to use the phone!)
