9 out of 10

A brilliant first novel, really gripping and edgy. I must admit I was a bit dubious early on with the jumps from one time to another but this was handled superbly and actually added to my enjoyment of the novel as I got into it.

I haven't looked forward to an author publishing a second book so much since I read Salmon Fishing in the Yemen by Paul Torday. I will spread the word at the BCUK UnCon in Nottingham and see if someone wants to take it.

Received this from Ardachy at the unconvention in Nottingham. I shall add this to my 'to Be Read' pile (which only consists of the ~15 books I got at the uncon), and look forward to reading it shortly.

9 out of 10

Wow, what superb, powerful writing.

I was a confused by the first seven pages which did not relate directly to the following chapters (although it is all revealed later) and the time shifts in the first chapter onwards. But once I got the three main characters sorted in my mind, I found it a gripping thriller. I don't usually enjoy psychological crime thrillers, but this drew me right into the story. I read it in two days, only stopping last night because I was worried about having nightmares reading such a dark tale late at night.

Some of the scenes of the mental and physical abuse make for brutal reading, but it is not sensationalised and is completely believable. Some of the plot was a little predictable, however the book provides us with many subtle twists that kept me on the edge of my seat throughout.
