"Late one summer's evening , antiquarian bookseller Adam Snow is returning from a client visit when he takes a wrong turn. He stumbles across a derelict Edwardian house, and compelled by curiosity, approaches the door. Standing before the entrance, he feels the unmistakeable sensation of a small cold hand creeping into his own, as if a child had taken hold of it..."

A book for you, chamonix44! :)

Congratulations on winning the EU Birthday SWEEPSTAKE 6th Edition!!! :D

This little book grabbed my attention from afar as soon as I entered the book store this afternoon to look for a book for you. I was amazed when I saw it was a Susan Hill, an author you've listed as one you'd like any book by! I guess it really wanted to get into your hands. :)

I hope you'll enjoy it, looks like an interesting read.

While waiting for my pay check to arrive so I can finally send this book to chamonix44, where it belongs, I couldn't resist reading it.

While I liked the premise of the story, the writing style prevented me from fully immersing myself into the plot and characters.

The language seemed a bit dated at times, and also sounded kind of "staccato" instead of flowing, which is (in my mind) slightly at odds with the fact that the main character, who is also the narrator, earns a living by selling antique books. Such a person is no doubt well read, so I can't imagine that he wouldn't write a bit more elaborately. Twice I almost gave up on reading it because of the writing style, but I wanted to know how the story ends so I persisted.

In the end it was a read enjoyable enough. :)

Good story! Like vedranaster I thought the language seemed a bit dated and so when looking something up on the internet was mentioned I was a bit taken aback, as all the way through I was thinking this was an old story.
Scary story and scary ending. I like walking by water, so I hope I will never feel a small hand in mine dragging me towards it !!! I rated it with 8 stars because it is a nice easy read and it was a bit unnerving at times! Wish we had found out if the old woman in the White House was real or a ghost.

I picked it up where it was left, in the Forester's arms. I was attracted by the cover and because I like Ghost stories. I was cautious after I read the previous comments on the language, as I don't like old fashioned writing styles. However, the book is the internal thoughts of a highly educated and higher class Englishman, so the language is simply matching that. Quite a good story and interesting to read. I guessed the ending though - although i would also say that had the ending been otherwise, it wouldn't have been very satisfying. Left it in Leicester Square, London.
