Synopsis (Credit: Back cover)
Far From the Madding Crowd is perhaps the most pastoral of Hardy's Wessex novels. It tells the story of the young farmer Gabriel Oak and his love for and pursuit of the elusive Bathsheba Everdene, whose wayward nature leads her to both tragedy and true love.
It tells of the dashing Sergeant Troy whose rakish philosophy of life was '... the past was yesterday; never, the day after'. And lastly, of the introverted and reclusive gentleman farmer, Mr Boldwood, whose love fills him with '... a fearful sense of exposure' when he first sets eyes on Bathsheba.
The background of this tale is the Wessex countryside in all its moods.

I first came across the story of this book in the form of an abridged audiobook, which is never a good idea. The abridged aspect of it, I mean. On the other hand, it (together with a few others) did get me to start reading the classics.
And I'm glad I read Far From the Madding Crowd. The characters are interesting and the author's descriptions of country life colourful. The prose was often beautiful, with an understated wit.
Some extracts:
It may have been observed that there is no regular path for getting out of love as there is for getting in. Some people look upon marriage as a short cut that way, but it has been known to fail.
Liddy, like a little brook, though shallow, was always rippling; her presence had not so much weight as to task thought, and yet enough to exercise it.
