Journal Entry 1 by Soozreader from Joensuu, Pohjois-Karjala / Norra Karelen Finland on Sunday, March 16, 2014
From the back cover: When a beautiful and high profile Somali immigrant is found dead - her body gruesomely mutilated - small-town detective Kari Vaara fears that exposure to the media will send shockwaves through Finland, an insular nation afraid to face its demons. Haunted by his past, the investigation begins to take its toll on Vaara and his American wife, Kate. Pregnant with their first child, she is struggling with the Finnish culture of silence and isolation. Things get too close for comfort when the chief suspect turns out to be someone Vaara would rather forget. But nothing is as it seems and Vaara knows that the unrelenting darkness and extreme cold above the Arctic Circle could drive anyone just a little insane...perhaps enough to kill.

Thanks! Oops happens to me quite often, especially when the same book has several different covers. Have started one Kari Vaara book in Finnish, but then something more urgent came along, probably a wishlist book.
Oops, I have this Kari Vaara in Finnish (tbr). Yorkshire-lass is my NSS-buddy in the Oxford Convention and I was trying to find her something Finnish to read. Well, James Thompson was an American, but the story happens in Finland. Can't comment yet about the authentity of the places mentioned, but a Finnish murder mystery does not exist, because the killer is usually the best friend of the deceaced, huge quantities of alcohol have been consumed, the murder weapon is normally an axe or a kitchen knife and the murderer has passed out beside his victim cum best friend. No mystery there.
Thank you for my lovely NSS package, I'm so looking forward to trying the Moomin coffee, I didn't even know that such a thing existed (you Finnish are very inventive, if a little strange :-) ) I have read this book and enjoyed it, so your choice was very good. I will try and find it a new reader very soon.
It was lovely to meet you at last, and put a face to the name.
