I stayed up too late reading this book. It's a who-dunnit, but with lots of intriguing psychology. It shows how fear and suspicion can bring out the worst in a seemingly sleepy little town through scapegoating and fear of 'otherness'. A main theme is how we can only ever superficially know others and have no idea of what dark desires might lurk unsuspected in our neighbours, friends, and relations.
