I've always been a sucker for books about words, so this one spoke to me.... found it at a cutesy little bookstore in Oskaloosa called "The Book Vault". Will probably read this one pretty soon.....

Well, this was quite an intersting little read - would have burned through it a lot quicker than I did, but kind of browsed a bit, and talked to people, sharing little tidbits here and there.
There were a lot of things I already knew, about languages in general, but plenty I didn't know. I have to say, though, that it left me with a certain sense of incompleteness; I realize that a book like this takes on a pretty big task, and it's tough to be as thorough as one would like to be.
I don't know what the author's credentials are, but I have the feeling he doesn't have the background in linguistics that I would expect - I'm not saying you've got to be like The Professor on Gilligan's Island to write a book like this, but there is a certain "human feel" lacking here.
Maybe this is my own personal bias coming through here, but there is a certain perspective you get from trying to learn another language - I'd find the author more credible if he'd said he'd gotten at least a little of the information from talking to people. And maybe he did, but I have the impression that it all came from looking it up in books, as he'd indicated in the introduction.
However, my nit-picking here doesn't mean that this is not a very useful book which needed to be written - after all, I am hanging on to it, something I rarely do with books I've registered on BookCrossing......
