I bought this book on 9/18 from the Friends of the Library in Antioch, IL for quarter.

c. 1971 -- 511 pages -- Paperback -- New Pulitzer Prize Winner -- #82 on the Modern Library Board's 100 Best Novels list -- #4 on My Top 20 Favorites list

Back Cover: "Angle of Repose" is Wallace Stegner's masterwork. It is a vital, sweeping novel that illuminates the American present against the American past of a century ago.

It is a story of the generation after the pioneers. But mostly it is the story of Susan Ward, a beautiful and gifted woman, whose skill as an artist brings her fame ... and into conflict with her marriage.

"Angle of Repose" is a book that will endure in your memory long after you have finished it.

Update: PROMISED to rhinowriter when I'm done reading it. (9/21/03)

I finished reading this on 5/3. Although it took be a while to read this 500+ page book (i.e. not a page-turner) it is still a great story of Pulitzer character. A crippled man discovers his own true feelings by researching the lives of his grandparents. Excellent read!!! The book (spine) started to show some wear while I was reading it. I'm greatly hoping it holds together for one more read for rhinowriter. *fingers crossed*

Quote (pages 91+92): "The sight of a Chinaman ..... left her shivering. The people here were not people. Except for Oliver, she was alone and in exile, and her heart was back where the sun rose."

(page 166): "Ten years on this coast and then home. Is ten years an eternity? Will you all be changed or dead ...? That sounds bitter. There are such good people here, but I simply can't care for them!"

(page 187): "What interests me in all these papers ... What really interests me is how two such unlike particles clung together, and under what strains, rolling downhill into their future until they reached the angle of repose where I knew them. That's where the interest is. That's where the meaning will be if I find any."

(page 208): "He is the silent character in this cast, he did not defend himself when he thought he was wronged ... I only assume what he felt, from knowing him as an old man. He never did less than the best he knew how. If that was not enough, if he felt criticism in the air, he put on his hat and walked out."

(page 395): "If she had left me when I was still a man ... I would have hunted among my own acts and in my own personality for her justifications, and would have found them. I did take her for granted, I did neglect her for history, I did bend her life to fit the curve of mine, we did have our share of quarrels."

After reading pages 405+406, I wonder if the gentleman on the cover is Oliver or Frank with Susan.

(page 511): "Wisdom ... is knowing what you have to accept."

Just received this in the mail from a fellow bookcrosser who is helping me out with my goal to read all the Pulitzer Prize winning novels. Much appreciated.

This book is incredible. My only regret is that it took me so long to get around to reading it. From the first page I was caught up and the story didn't let me go until the last page. I found myself reading a tad slower as I drew near the end because I didn't want it to finish. Unfortunately, this book will travel no more. As Cyber Libraian noted, this volume was about to disintergrate when it came to me. Several chapters into the story it fell apart in my hands. I went to the library to get another copy so I could finish. Thank you, Cyber Librarian, for sending me one of the most satisfying reads I've had in a long, long time.
