From the cover:

Materena Mahi, champion professional cleaner and best listener in all of Tahiti, is usually the one solving the problems. But right now she's that close to throwing her daughter Leilani into the street. 'It doesn't matter what I do,' she confides to Mama Teta, to cousin Rita, to Mama loana and to the Virgin Mary Understanding Woman, 'It's always the wrong thing. I'm going taravana!' And if that wasn't enough, there's a boy on the horizon. Or so the relatives are saying.

Yes,this was a nice story. I really liked it!
I could take a look into the Tahitian life style, when the old customs are disappearing little by little. The book tells about sad things and happy things. Somehow the life is wonderful on Tahiti or it would be if only the Tahitian men were different and took their responsibilities seriously. They ought to see that there are other things in life than just work and drinking beer with your friends.
Tahitians used to plant a tree for each new baby. If the tree died, the child was going to die, too. A tree for a child adopted in France was in a bad condition. So the child was in danger, too. The women relatives got together to pray for the child. One of them wanted to be sure. She gave fertilizer and water to the tree. The tree got well and everybody was happy because the child was saved.
