From the cover:

The adventure began when a young British photographer, Kevin Muggleton, suggested driving from one end of Africa to the other - "You know, the old 'from Cape to Cairo' sort of thing." For the feminist writer Ann Jones, it soon became and expedition with a mission: to find the legendary Lovedu, a tribe ruled by a great rainmaking queen and dedicated to the "feminine" ideal of compromise, cooperation, tolerance and peace.

This book was on read last summer. Honestly, very interesting adventure, and nice style of writing, very entertaining book. And of course, lots of information of different African countries on the way. Zaire was the mirror for all the stereotypes of jungle and mud roads, less extreme in other countries. The narrating was at the same time also quite objective, although it was not so easy to travel together, at least as the motivation of these persons was quite different. It was a bit comforting, that as this book had been published, they apparently had survived from that journey. The Zaire-part was a culmination of the whole story for me, quite a struggle it was, and the end of the story did not quite have the power anymore. Therefore, the part where the author visitedthe Lovedu queen was a bit of a disappointment - I started to think, what my expectations were related to that: Maybe I supposed that the people lived in lively village and the queen would have been very sociable and warm and wellcoming etc. The background of Lovedu people itself, on the other hand, is fascinating.

Excellent travel writing, really enjoyed this one! Although the subtitle is a bit misleading - okay, it kind of was "A woman's journey through Africa" but half the time she did it with a man (mostly in his terms, even) and the other half with two other women she met on the way, while I had interpreted that sentence to mean more like a solo journey. But whatever, it was good reading anyway :)
