Girl, Interrupted

Book Description: When reality got "too dense" for 18-year-old Susanna Kaysen, she was hospitalized. It was 1967, and reality was too dense for many people. But few who are labeled mad and locked up for refusing to stick to an agreed-upon reality possess Kaysen's lucidity in sorting out a maelstrom of contrary perceptions. Her observations about hospital life are deftly rendered; often darkly funny. Her clarity about the complex province of brain and mind, of neuro-chemical activity and something more, make this book of brief essays an exquisite challenge to conventional thinking about what is normal and what is deviant.
My Review: This is an unbelievable story, but it apparently happened. Can you imagine going to a new psychiatrist and within 30 minutes he decides to have you committed to a psychiatric hospital?!? This story takes place while she is in the hospital for two years. I think most psychology students would gain insight after reading this book.

Arrived safely in NJ. I am looking forward to this one. I remember reading a few magazine blurbs on it when it came out. Thank you, JennyC1230, for sharing this with me.
I am finding it difficult to express my thoughts on this book. Why? I am shocked that someone had to go to a psychiatric hospital after only a brief visit to a psychiatrist. This book provides her story and a bit of update of some of the people in the hospital with her.
I won't comment on a memoir because it is someone's life. I thank the author for sharing her story with the world and hope that it provides insight to others.
