A very bleak story. A man trapped by his own memories and indecision...as are the women in the story.
Almost poetic though... as the characters despair increases, the world also decays.

I'm not sure I got all the nuances of the story. Like the other book I read by this author, Snow Country, I felt like a Japanese person would have understood more about the significance of the different tea bowls and ceremony.
